Born in rural East Texas, Kelcy Warren dreamed of doing something special with his life. He came from a family of hard-working people, and his parents instilled a strong work ethic from an early age. He worked odd jobs throughout his teen years to save money for college, but when he got there, he struggled to adjust to the newfound freedom and flunked out at the end of his first year. Undeterred, Warren returned home, worked with his father and attended the local junior college at night. Warren eventually earned a scholarship to work on a research project sponsored by the National Science Foundation, which ultimately paved the way for a successful career as an international financier.
In 1978, Warren began his career in the energy business as a pipeline design engineer for Lone Star Gas Company. His journey then took him to Endevco, where he moved into the commercial aspect of energy development. After acquiring and renaming it Cornerstone Natural Gas, he later co-founded Energy Transfer, one of the largest and most diversified portfolios of publicly traded energy partnerships in the U.S.
In 1997, Warren established an endowment at his alma mater, UTA, in honor of Qasim, the professor who took a personal interest in Warren and his fellow students. By doing so, he helped to ensure that future generations of business students would have similar opportunities to learn from him.
Kelcy Warren has continued to give back by hosting annual fundraisers for Cherokee Crossroads Inc., a charity that provides financial assistance to children’s causes in Texas. He also serves on the board of The Lamplighter School and is a member of the prestigious Texas Business Hall of Fame. Warren’s philanthropic efforts have earned him several awards, including the Gas Processors Suppliers Association’s Hanlon Award and Ernst and Young’s Entrepreneur of the Year Award.
In addition to his philanthropic efforts, Kelcy Warren has also made a name for himself in business circles. He is widely considered one of the most successful international financiers, having built a portfolio of investments that span the globe.
