Robert Kraft is a businessman and philanthropist who owns the National Football League’s New England Patriots.
Robert Kraft is a graduate of Columbia University with a degree in business administration. He got his start in sports by attempting to license the AFL’s New York Jets for his family’s company, Kraft Sports, but was turned down. In 1965, he became chairman of the board and ran the New England Patriots after his father passed away. He bought out complete ownership in 1990.
After buying control of the team from James Orthwein, he installed a new head coach to end years of feuding between Orthwein and the previous head coach: Bill Parcells. Under Parcells, the Patriots won three Super Bowl titles (1990, 1997, 2004) and became one of the premier franchises in the NFL. Kraft is known as a self-made man and philanthropist; he is also well known for being involved in charitable and business causes.
In 1994, Robert Kraft earned his first Super Bowl ring when Parcells led the team to victory against the San Diego Chargers. He also was involved heavily in professional wrestling in the 1980s – 90s, owning a majority stake in New York City Wrestling; then buying out before its 2002 bankruptcy, pro wrestling being his main interest.
Three coaches have led the Patriots since Kraft took over in the 1990s: Parcells, Pete Carroll, and current head coach Bill Belichick. During that time, they won three Super Bowl championships (1996, 2001, 2003). Today, the team is at the centre of controversy surrounding allegations of videotaping other teams’ signals during games. The NFL fined the Patriots $750,000 for what it considered a willful attempt to circumvent a rule prohibiting the taping of such calls; this is the largest fine ever imposed on an NFL team.
Additionally, Belichick was fined $500,000, while his assistant coaches were fined $250,000 each. The Patriots are appealing these fines. Visit this page for more information.
