Since Founding JD.com (Nasdaq: JD), Richard Qiangdong Liu Has Served As Chairman And CEO

Richard Liu Qiangdong is widely credited for pioneering technology and data-driven logistics in China and bringing eCommerce to millions of rural customers. Liu Qiangdong has been instrumental in driving JD.com’s international expansion, most recently leading the company’s foray into Southeast Asia.

Despite their hardships, Liu’s parents were determined to give him the best education they could afford and sent him to a local middle school. He studied economics and management there, and after graduating with a degree in accounting, he was accepted into the graduate program at Harvard Business School.

Upon returning to China, Richard Liu took up a position with the state-owned China Resources Enterprise, where he quickly rose through the ranks to become its youngest-ever general manager. In 2004, Liu decided to take a risk by leaving his secure job and using his life savings to launch JD.com, an e-commerce platform that would revolutionize the way Chinese people shop online.

Today JD.com is one of the largest eCommerce companies in China, having grown from its humble beginnings as a small online bookseller into an international powerhouse that sells everything, including electronics and clothing.

Despite these humble beginnings, Liu’s parents saw the importance of education and encouraged him to excel academically. He was accepted into the prestigious Nankai University in Tianjin, where he majored in information management.

After graduating in 1998, Liu began working at a major logistics company and started his own business soon. In 2003, he founded JD.com, an eCommerce platform initially focused on selling electronics and home appliances.

Since then, JD.com has grown exponentially to become one of China’s largest eCommerce companies, with an estimated annual revenue of more than USD 50 billion. With more than 300 million active customers and over 200,000 employees worldwide, Richard’s leadership as CEO has been essential in driving the company’s success and global expansion.

Liu is widely respected for his pragmatic approach to business and commitment to developing innovative technologies that meet customer needs while maintaining a strong focus on social responsibility.

Liu’s parents sent him to a vocational school near Suzhou to give their son a better future. He developed an interest in business here and eventually graduated as one of the best with a degree in economics and finance. After graduation Liu got a job at the local branch of the China Construction Bank; there, he worked for two years before becoming an assistant manager at the state-owned Jiangsu Provincial Investment Corporation. In 1998, he left this position to start his own business, eventually JD.com. Follow this page on Twitter, for more information.
