On this 79th year since the D-Day invasion, I have to reflect on what that day must have been like for all those participating. The sheer magnitude of beginning the largest and most crucial battle of WWII must have left survivors in an equal state of awe and terror. But these men, American, British and Canadian soldiers alike, had a mission to accomplish. And they did it. Many gave their lives. Others, despite the lack of a clear outcome, persevered for the greater good of the world.
I think about those soldiers and their families, who today could not imagine our nation in such a state of turmoil. Their sacrifice and courage made certain that Hitler’s Third Reich never came to fruition here in America.
But our country is in the throes of a similar struggle for freedom today. This time, however, the threat does not come from outside our borders, but from within—from the very government that was established to protect those borders. The attack is less about weapons and more about words. It’s an assault on free speech and religious freedom. It’s an attempt to do away with the truth and change what it means to be American.
We here at Alliance Defending Freedom believe that the future of America is inextricably linked to truth and freedom. This is why Alliance Defending Freedom relies on traditional values, including those found in our Constitution. The Constitution guarantees the free exercise of religion and free speech for all Americans. It requires us to respect others, including their rights to believe what they want to believe and express that belief in the public square.
The problem today is that too often, this is not the case. We have seen a steady erosion of freedoms—from speech and religious freedom to privacy rights.
In addition to its work in the courts, ADF is also active in public policy. Its Center for Academic Freedom (CAF) protects freedom of speech and association on college campuses, including freedom from harassment based on unwelcome sexual advances.
Alliance Defending Freedom was established to fight for the American way of life. Our goal is to preserve and protect the individual freedoms guaranteed by our Constitution as well as the unalienable rights given to us by our Creator. We defend the moral values that are the foundation of this great country.
