MATTHEW MANSELL, ATHLO FOUNDER

Athlo founder and CEO, Matthew Mansell is an admitted keen entrepreneur who’s been looking for a business idea to sink his teeth into for over a decade. Having spent the last few years in IT recruitment, he learned about both sides of the hiring process. He saw how frustrating recruiters were at dealing with customers who were so busy that they couldn’t even spare five minutes to listen to what they had to say, and at how bad job seekers were at making themselves available for interviews.

His customers had asked him to build a digital platform that would increase productivity and engagement. But they wanted to retain control of their own data, at the same time as they were looking for a more intuitive interface and more effective marketing channels. He initially hoped that a job board would be the answer, but it seemed too obvious – in fact his API turned out to be so well respected that it’s now used by some of his competitors. So he began searching for other ways of solving the problem.

Matthew Mansell‘s solution was to create a completely separate platform. As he explains: “We took a core team of five and worked on building a product that had the features we required rather than what we thought the market wanted. We wanted it to be intuitive, so we actually started by creating our own account and exploring every single feature.” The result was Athlo, which promises to be agile and responsive due to its unique background as a digital platform that has emerged from within recruitment itself.

It makes it easy for agencies and clients to search for talent and conduct interviews, without having to deal with the hassle of learning new technology. Matthew Mansell reckons that it’s realistic to expect around 5–6 minutes from candidates, so he built his platform to be as easy as possible for job seekers, whilst being powerful enough to handle the needs of recruiters.
